Every year on August 31, communities around the world observe International Overdose Awareness Day (IOAD). At Greenbranch Recovery in Egg Harbor Township, we stand in solidarity with families, friends, and individuals impacted by overdose, dedicating this day to remembrance, education, and prevention.

As a local provider of compassionate, evidence-based addiction treatment in Atlantic County, we know firsthand the toll that overdose takes on our South Jersey communities. IOAD is a call to action and a reminder that recovery is possible.

The Meaning Behind International Overdose Awareness Day

Started in Melbourne, Australia in 2001 by Sally J. Finn, IOAD has become the world’s largest campaign to end overdoses. It aims to honor those who have died without stigma and to support those left behind with dignity and compassion.

Why This Day Matters to South Jersey

In towns like Northfield, Galloway, Absecon, and Cape May Court House, families continue to feel the impact of addiction and overdose. This day gives us an opportunity to:

  • Educate about the risks of overdose and tools for prevention
  • Reduce stigma by encouraging open, shame-free conversations
  • Support grieving families who deserve a space to mourn without judgment
  • Promote lifesaving resources like naloxone and evidence-based care

The 2025 Theme: “One Big Family”

This year’s theme, “One Big Family,” is a powerful reminder that substance use disorder affects all of us. It transcends backgrounds, zip codes, and beliefs. Healing begins when we treat everyone impacted by addiction with respect, understanding, and community support.

How You Can Get Involved in Atlantic County

You don’t have to be a healthcare provider to make a difference. Here are ways you can contribute:

  • Carry Naloxone (Narcan): Learn how to administer this overdose-reversal medication
  • Attend Local Events: Vigils and educational forums are held in communities like Linwood, Somers Point, and Sea Isle City
  • Wear Purple: Purple represents overdose awareness and shows solidarity
  • Share Your Story: Personal experiences can inspire hope and reduce isolation

Know the Signs of an Overdose

Quick response can save lives. Warning signs may include:
